Biography

Vassilis Georgiades (Dardanelles, Turkey, 12 of August 1921-Athens, 30 of April 2000) was Greek director, producer of cinema and actor. Two of Georgiades’ films, “The red lights» and «The soil was painted red», were proposed by American Film Academy in the final five for the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. Also in 1970 his film “Girls in the Sun” was nominated by the Foreign Correspondents Association in Los Angeles for a Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film.

Biography

Initially he worked as an assistant director in three films, “My Child Must Live” (1951), “Dead State” (1952) and “The little Mouse” (1954).

Two years later (1956), he financed and directed his first film “The Aces of the Stadium“, which was re-produced 41 years later, just three years before his death, under the title “Sunday Heroes” (1997). The conception of his idea, i.e. to use real football players in the roles, was innovative and unique in the annals, while its directorial approach also referred to italian neorealism. He also took part as an actor in his first play, playing a small role, as well as in seven other films. In 2000, he was given a thank you for his contribution to the film “Back Door”.
